How can you turn a commodity into a purple cow ?

Reading Seth’s blog is so inspiring ! Specially when he seems to answer why « when it’s cheap…then nothing helps ! »… So in a recent note Seth Godin wrote, we learn (ok some of us knew it already) that price is NOT what matters : Josh asks, « How do you turn something that is considered to be a commodity into a Purple Cow, when the lowest price is the only thing that seems to matter to customers? » « If you tell me that price is the only thing that matters to customers, I respond that nothing about this product matters to them… No, you can’t magically make it interesting to all. Why do we need to share our differences ?

« Lets share what makes us different because everyone can already see what makes us the same », wrote Simon Sinek yesterday. And that is certainly inspiring to me. Yes I agree that what makes us different is what we seek in each other, as a human been. But more connected to marketing goals, we should realize that the reason why a customer is buying any kind of product or service, is precisely because he thinks it is different ! So why would he share anything but the very different product he has founded ? Why would he even talk about (or write) something we all know to be common ?
